Sourced figures: prices in the table are published by the operators and guides named, with source and check month. They are not our offers, and they change. Nothing here is legal or medical advice.

A Saleh Bay whale shark liveaboard puts you at the bagan fishing platforms around first light, where, by operators' accounts, guests watch, snorkel or dive with sharks feeding near the nets. Only some published trips name the stop. Mermaid II builds it into an 8-day Bali trip, while on other crossings it depends on season and conditions, and a sighting cannot be promised.

Where in Saleh Bay do liveaboards meet whale sharks?

At the bagans, which are fishing platforms with lift nets that use light to draw small pelagic fish and sergestid shrimps. The ISRA factsheet on Saleh Bay says whale sharks commonly gather around these nets, and that is the meeting point operators describe. The bay itself is a semi-enclosed embayment in northeast Sumbawa, directly connected to the Flores Sea, with small islands, coral reefs, seagrass and mangroves, in the same factsheet's description.

Ask about the water under the boat. Ocean Earth Travels says the bay is not shallow but a deep sheltered inlet, roughly 70 metres in parts, with encounters happening in the top few metres around the platforms. Treat that as one seller's view until your own boat's briefing settles it.

Clear water is not the draw here. Liveaboard Indonesia gives Saleh Bay visibility as typically 10 to 15 m, because the water is plankton-rich. If you are travelling mainly for reef photography, set your expectations by that figure and not by a brochure shot taken elsewhere on the route. Why the sharks keep returning to this water is a separate question, and our page on why whale sharks stay in Saleh Bay covers the research.

Which published trips include a Saleh Bay stop?

Not every Sumbawa liveaboard turns into the bay, so read the itinerary wording closely. The published examples fall into three groups: the stop sits in the trip's name, it appears in a sample programme, or it is only mentioned as something that may happen. The table sorts published examples. Every trip in it belongs to the named operator and none is an offer from this site. Mermaid II's rates are shown in the price table on this page.

The Mermaid II listing is the clearest case, since the operator puts Saleh Bay in the product itself. The June crossing is the opposite kind of listing. It is sold as a passage east for the Komodo season, and Saleh Bay is only mentioned as possible in season, so a buyer who wants the sharks should get the stop confirmed for that departure before paying.

Two alternatives appear in the price table because they set a useful reference, though neither is a liveaboard. Amanwana's excursion runs from the resort on Moyo by speedboat in about two hours and is limited to 6 guests. A shore-based outing from Sumbawa Besar, sold by Sumbawa Adventour, is the other, and our comparison of a whale shark liveaboard or day trip weighs the two.

Longer trips put the bay inside a wider plan. The route comparison shows where it falls on each pattern, the Bali to Komodo crossing guide covers the June sailing, and the 4D/3N guide covers programmes from Sumbawa Besar. Whole-trip rates are on the cost page. Moyo and Satonda are the neighbours most often named beside the bay, and each has its own page.

What does a morning at a bagan look like?

It starts in the dark and is largely over by mid-morning. Kompas gives the best time to meet whale sharks as about 05.30 to 09.00 WITA, which means a departure around 03.00 for an outing from shore. A boat that has spent the night in the bay should cut that transfer, but ask for the planned wake-up time and how far the boat lies from the platforms.

What guests actually do varies by operator. The published descriptions give this much:

  • Where you are in the water. Ocean Earth Travels places encounters near the surface around the platform, which is why snorkellers are not shut out of this stop.
  • How you can take part. Amanwana offers viewing from the boat or snorkelling, with a surcharge for diving. Terms differ by seller, so ask.
  • How many attempts you get. Sumbawa Tour's two mornings allow a second try if the first one is poor. On a long crossing, the itinerary is where you find out how many mornings the bay gets.
  • How you behave around the sharks. Distances, group sizes and touching are covered on our page about Saleh Bay whale shark rules.

Coralia's sample itinerary also mentions fish being added to hold sharks near the platform. That practice is disputed, and the people who describe it do not all see it the same way. Read whether feeding whale sharks in Saleh Bay is ethical before you book, since it is easier to raise the issue with a seller than with a crew at dawn.

Is the bagan stop snorkel only, or can you dive it?

The sellers disagree, so ask for your boat's rule. Neptune's scuba site says encounters at the bagans are by snorkel only, to keep the sharks undisturbed, and gives 0 to 5 m. Liveaboard Indonesia says divers and snorkellers both take part, in 5 to 15 m of water. Adelaar describes encounters on snorkel or on scuba, usually early in the morning. Amanwana treats diving as an add-on with a surcharge, and Komodo Resort lists dive depths of 5 to 18 m for the bay.

We have not read the binding Indonesian texts on whale shark tourism, so we cannot say which of these house rules the law requires. The Konservasi Indonesia carrying-capacity study does treat diving as a real option, with a maximum of 8 people for diving and snorkelling at a bagan. If a tank is the reason you are booking, ask three things: whether this departure allows diving at the platform, how many divers go down at once, and what you do instead if the crew decides on the day that only snorkellers go in. Our Sumbawa diving guide covers the certification side.

How many whale sharks are in the bay, and how big are they?

Konservasi Indonesia's report for 2025 gives 174 individual whale sharks identified in Saleh Bay through monitoring up to 2025. That number is a running total of animals told apart over years of monitoring. It says nothing about how many you would meet on one morning. Sellers give modest figures for that: Liveaboard Indonesia says one to four sharks at a time, and Adelaar says up to four or five. Neither is an audited count. Any percentage a seller quotes you needs a source behind it.

On size, the ISRA factsheet puts the average whale shark sighted in the bay at 512 plus or minus 112 cm total length. In plain terms, something around five metres is typical. That is still a very large fish beside a snorkeller, but a photograph of a far bigger animal should not set your expectations for this site.

Why is a stop never certain on a longer crossing?

A crossing has a fixed end port and a fixed date, and Saleh Bay is a bay the boat has to turn into. When a route is described as following the north coast, as the June crossing is, a stop inside the bay is the kind of call a captain can make late, on the weather and the time left. That is our reading of how the listings are written, and operators put the same caution in their own words. Coralia, as the table shows, warns that its itinerary may change.

A shorter programme built around the bay still carries the risk. Sumbawa Tour states that it cannot promise a sighting or refund one, because of sea conditions. If an operator whose product depends on this stop will not commit, a crossing that treats it as a side stop cannot be expected to.

Season adds another layer. The ISRA factsheet records whale sharks in the bay year-round, but scientists and operators differ on the strongest months, and our guide to the best time for a Sumbawa liveaboard lays the two out. For the factors that move your odds on the day, see can you see whale sharks in Saleh Bay. Shared boats need their own caution, which our piece on the 4-day boat from Lombok to Labuan Bajo explains.

What should you ask an operator about this stop?

Ask these before you pay, and keep the answers in writing:

  1. Is Saleh Bay written into the itinerary for my departure, or listed as possible?
  2. How many mornings at the bagans does the plan allow?
  3. If the stop is dropped, what replaces it, and is anything refunded?
  4. Is a bagan fee or local guide boat charged, and is it inside the rate? Sumbawa Tour lists both as included in its programme. We have not found an official current ticket price for the whale shark area, so ask what any charge pays for.
  5. How many guests go in at one time, and who gives the briefing?
  6. Is it snorkelling, diving or watching from the boat, and does any of these cost extra?
  7. Does anyone add fish to keep the sharks near the platform?

Put the same list to an offer from us. A request here can lead to a contract with a company in our group, so test our offer as you would any other.

What other questions come up about the Saleh Bay stop?

Do all Sumbawa liveaboards stop in Saleh Bay?

No. The stop depends on the boat, the route and the departure. Mermaid II names the bay in one 8-day trip, while other listings mention it only in season or as a sample stop, so confirm it for your own dates.

Can you see whale sharks without getting in the water?

Yes, on at least one programme. Amanwana's excursion offers viewing from the boat as well as snorkelling. Ask any other seller what guests who stay dry would see and whether a separate boat is used.

Do you need to be a certified diver for this stop?

No. Ocean Earth Travels places encounters in the top few metres around the platforms, and programmes such as Sumbawa Tour's include snorkel gear. If you do want to dive, check for a surcharge, as Amanwana applies one.

Is a whale shark sighting promised on these trips?

No. Sumbawa Tour states that it cannot promise a sighting or a refund on one, and this site makes no such promise either. A second morning at the bagans gives you another attempt but does not settle the matter.

How early does a whale shark morning start?

Very early. Kompas puts the best time at about 05.30 to 09.00 WITA. Sleeping aboard should shorten the transfer compared with coming from shore, but expect to be up before light and ask your operator for the planned time.
