Sourced figures: prices in the table are published by the operators and guides named, with source and check month. They are not our offers, and they change. Nothing here is legal or medical advice.
A whale shark day trip from Sumbawa Besar means a pick-up around 02:00 and about 12 hours, by one operator's timing, for one morning at the bagan platforms. A short liveaboard gives a second morning plus Satonda and Moyo, but takes days. Choose the day trip if whale sharks are your only goal and your dates are tight.
How does a day trip run?
Very early, by road and then by boat. Whale sharks commonly aggregate around bagan, the Saleh Bay lift nets that use light to attract small fish, and the encounter window Kompas describes falls early in the morning. Here is how the published timings line up.
| Time | What happens | Who says so |
|---|---|---|
| 02:00 | Pick-up in Sumbawa Besar | Sumbawa Adventour |
| About 04:00 | Reach Labuhan Jambu, also spelled Labuan Jambu | Sumbawa Adventour |
| 05:30 to 09:00 WITA | Good time to meet whale sharks | Kompas |
| About 12 hours after pick-up | Tour ends overall | Sumbawa Adventour |
The sources do not match to the minute. Kompas says the 05:30 window means a departure around 03:00, while Sumbawa Adventour only reaches the village around 04:00. Treat both as approximate, and ask your operator what time the boat is at the platform.
The road leg is the fixed cost. A travel writer puts Labuhan Jambu at roughly two hours from Sumbawa Besar and about four hours from the Poto Tano ferry port. So arriving from Lombok on the day is unrealistic. You sleep in Sumbawa Besar the night before, or closer to the village, and the sleep you get is short. If you are already in the village, the half-day trip from Ocean Earth Travels avoids the night drive, though you then have to get yourself there and find a bed. Our access guide covers the flights and the ferry.
What does sleeping aboard change?
It changes the number of mornings and what surrounds them. Sumbawa Tour's private programme picks up at the airport, boards at Goa harbour, visits Satonda, gives two whale shark mornings, visits Moyo and ends with a night in a hotel. Tiger Blue's four-night trip also starts and ends in Sumbawa Besar. Sleeping on the boat should spare you the 02:00 road transfer, since you wake nearer the bay, but ask what time the crew start. The four-day trip guide covers these programmes in full.
| Day trip from Sumbawa Besar | Half-day from the village | Resort excursion | Short liveaboard | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example | Sumbawa Adventour; The Langkah | Ocean Earth Travels | Amanwana | Sumbawa Tour; Tiger Blue |
| Starting point | Sumbawa Besar, by road | Labuan Jambu | The Moyo resort, about two hours by speedboat | Sumbawa Besar and the boat |
| Whale shark mornings | One | One | One excursion | Two on Sumbawa Tour's plan |
| What else you see | The road and the bay | The bay | Resort stay on Moyo | Satonda and Moyo on Sumbawa Tour's plan |
| Group detail stated | Shared or fully private | Open group | Limited to 6 guests | Private, or by the cabin on Tiger Blue |
A second morning helps with an obvious risk, which is that the animals do not come on the day you picked. It does not remove the risk. The same travel writer says fishermen do not operate bagan around the full moon, so whale sharks are less likely to appear, and that he heard of a two-week gap in March. That is one person's report and not data, but it is a reason to check the moon before you fix any date, on a boat or on a day tour. Our sighting guide covers what is published on chances.
Neither option escapes the crowd. Ocean Earth Travels writes that five or six boats may cluster at one active bagan in the dry season, and that enforcement of distance and no-touch rules varies, so ask about it either way. The code of conduct is the same subject on either trip, and it is set out in the whale shark rules guide.
What do published day trips cost?
The price table on this page carries five lines, and they are not like for like. Read each with its conditions in mind.
- Sumbawa Adventour. Two separate per-person rates, shared and fully private, both for 2 to 10 participants. Confirm on its page how one per-person figure covers both two and ten people.
- The Langkah. A range per person that moves with group size, from a group of 10 down to a solo guest. If you travel alone, read the top of the range.
- Ocean Earth Travels. A "from" rate for an open group at Labuan Jambu. It starts in the village, so ask what getting there costs you.
- Amanwana. A per-guest range from a 2023 trade guide, shown before tax and service. It is an excursion for resort guests, and its age alone means you should ask for a current rate.
We do not offer a total comparing a day trip with a liveaboard, because this table holds no fare for a short liveaboard. A day trip's rate is also not its full cost. Add the hotel for the night before, the flight or ferry to Sumbawa Besar, and a second night if you do not want to travel straight after a 02:00 start. For a short liveaboard, get the fare in writing, then check what the seller includes: Sumbawa Tour lists transfers, the bagan fee and local guide boat, entrance fee, meals, a licensed guide and snorkel gear, and excludes flights and alcohol.
Sellers also treat a no-show differently. Sumbawa Adventour says a sighting may not occur because of sea conditions and refunds only part of the payment. Sumbawa Tour says it offers no refund on sightings. That difference is worth more to you than a small gap between two fares, so read it before you compare rates.
Who is each option better suited to?
The choice comes down to what else you want from those days, and how you feel about 02:00.
- The day trip suits travellers already on Sumbawa with a fixed return, people who dislike sleeping aboard, and anyone for whom whale sharks are the only goal.
- The half-day suits those willing to stay near Labuan Jambu, since it cuts out the night road.
- The resort excursion suits guests already staying on Moyo who want a small group, with viewing from the boat or snorkelling and a surcharge for diving.
- The short liveaboard suits people who want more than one attempt, and who also want Satonda and Moyo without arranging separate boats.
- A longer crossing suits divers with a week or more, though Saleh Bay is not on every route. The route comparison shows which ones name it.
One more check applies to all of them: can you snorkel comfortably in open water before breakfast? If you cannot, ask about viewing from the boat before you pay, since among the sources here only Amanwana's states that option.
Which published prices did we check?
Rates and fees published by named operators, trip organisers and travel guides, each with its source and the month we checked it. They are not our offers. Rates change, and estimates are labelled as estimates; check the source before you rely on a figure.

What do readers ask when choosing between the two?
Can I see whale sharks on a day trip from Sumbawa Besar?
Yes, that is what these tours sell, but no seller here promises it. Sumbawa Adventour itself says a sighting may not occur because of sea conditions.
How early does the day trip start?
Very early. Sumbawa Adventour picks up at 02:00 in Sumbawa Besar and reaches Labuhan Jambu around 04:00, with about 12 hours overall.
Do I need a night in Sumbawa Besar before a day trip?
Yes, in practice. With a pick-up at that hour, and about four hours by road from Poto Tano on a travel writer's estimate, you cannot arrive from Lombok on the same morning.
Does a liveaboard give better odds of a sighting?
It gives more mornings, not a known rate. Sumbawa Tour plans two, which is a second attempt, with no published figure for how much that improves your chances.
Is a liveaboard always the more expensive choice?
The table here cannot settle that, because it shows excursion rates only. Get a written fare for the short trip, then add the hotel and transfers a day tour would need.
