Sourced figures: prices in the table are published by the operators and guides named, with source and check month. They are not our offers, and they change. Nothing here is legal or medical advice.
Yes, whale sharks can be seen in Saleh Bay, and the scientific record shows them in every part of the year, but nobody can promise one on a given morning. Encounters centre on fishing platforms at dawn, one travel writer says a full moon may reduce them, no source publishes a sighting rate, and operators themselves warn that a trip can end without one.
Are whale sharks there all year?
On the record, yes. The ISRA factsheet describes regular observations between 2017 and 2022 across the whole year, with the largest number in March and April. A satellite-tracking study covering 70 sharks tagged at four Indonesian sites over the decade to 2025 adds context from another angle: it found that habitat suitable all year is scarce and sits mostly at a handful of gathering sites, Saleh Bay among them.
The same animals also come back. Photo-identification in the ISRA dataset found that 76 percent of the sharks were seen again in later years, the longest interval being 5.12 years. That is strong evidence the bay matters to whale sharks. It says nothing about your particular morning, and it should not be read as odds.
The running count points the same way. Konservasi Indonesia's report gives 174 individuals identified through monitoring up to 2025. That total builds up over years and tells you nothing about one morning, but it does show how many different animals have used the bay. Water clarity is a separate matter: Liveaboard Indonesia gives Saleh Bay visibility as typically 10 to 15 m.
Where sources part ways is the question of which months are strongest:
| Source | Kind of source | What it says about the months |
|---|---|---|
| ISRA factsheet | Scientific | Year-round; most observations in March and April |
| Komodo Resort | Operator | Season from May to October; June to August usually most consistent |
| Liveaboard Indonesia | Operator | Sightings every month; peak from May to October |
A count of observations may partly reflect when people were out looking, and a seller's season may partly reflect when its boats are in the area, so neither is a clean measure of how many sharks are present. Our guide to the time of year for a Sumbawa liveaboard weighs this against weather and sea conditions.
What time of day matters?
Early morning. Kompas puts the window at about 05.30 to 09.00 WITA, which it says means a departure around 03.00. The reason lies in how the encounter works. According to ISRA, whale sharks commonly gather around bagan lift nets, whose lights draw in small fish and sergestid shrimps, and they have been watched pulling baitfish through the mesh from outside.
So your chances are tied to the platforms and to the people who fish from them. That has two practical effects when you are choosing a trip:
- Ask where you sleep the night before. On a boat, the useful question is how far it lies from an active platform at first light. On a day trip, it is how long the drive and the boat ride take.
- Ask how a platform is chosen. Someone has to find out which bagan has sharks that morning. Ask the operator who does that and how.
The association with fishing platforms also raises questions about feeding, which belong in a separate discussion. If it weighs on your decision, read our discussion of the ethics of feeding at the platforms first. For how a boat-based visit is usually structured, see the Saleh Bay whale shark liveaboard guide.
Does the moon matter?
Possibly, though the evidence here is thin. A travel writer reports that the bagan stop working around the full moon, which makes a shark less likely to show up, and says he heard of a two-week gap in March with no sightings. That is one person's account of what he was told, and no scientific source here measures a lunar effect in Saleh Bay.
It is still plausible enough to act on, since the nets depend on light, and it costs nothing to check. Look up the moon phase for your dates, then ask the operator directly whether the local bagan will be working on those nights. If several operators give you the same answer, it counts for more than this paragraph does.
Note the tension in that March report. March is also one of the two months in which ISRA records the most observations. Both can be true: a month can lead a multi-year tally and still contain a blank fortnight in one particular year. So a single good or bad report should not move you far.
What happens if none appear?
You may get part of your money back, or none of it. Two operators state their position, and they differ:
| Operator | Product | Stated position when no shark is seen |
|---|---|---|
| Sumbawa Tour | Private 4D/3N programme | No promise and no refund, citing sea conditions |
| Sumbawa Adventour | Whale shark day trip from Sumbawa Besar | A sighting may not occur; only part of the payment is refunded. See the price table on this page for the amount |
If whale sharks are your main reason for a longer trip, put the question to that operator in writing: what happens if there is no sighting, and what happens if the morning is cancelled for weather? Those are two separate events, and an offer can treat them differently.
Is there a published sighting rate?
No. We have not found a source with a percentage that could be tested. Operators use words such as "reliable", but those adjectives come with no data behind them, and any percentage you see on a sales page should prompt the question of where it came from.
You can ask for something better than a percentage. Request the log for the operator's recent departures: how many went out, on which dates, and how many saw a shark. An operator that keeps such a record can share it. One that cannot has told you something useful as well. Treat a small sample with caution, and remember that this site promises no sightings either.
Which published prices did we check?
Rates and fees published by named operators, trip organisers and travel guides, each with its source and the month we checked it. They are not our offers. Rates change, and estimates are labelled as estimates; check the source before you rely on a figure.
| Item | Published price | Source | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amount the same operator says it refunds when no whale shark is seen | IDR 1,000,000 | sumbawaadventour.com | Nov 2026 |
What do readers ask about their chances?
Can you see whale sharks in Saleh Bay in any month?
Yes, on the scientific record, which reports observations across the year from 2017 to 2022. That does not mean equal odds in every month, and sources disagree on which months are strongest, with ISRA pointing to March and April and operators to May through October.
What are the odds of seeing one?
No tested figure is published. Ask the operator for its recent departure log, and treat percentages on sales pages with suspicion unless they come with their dates and sample size.
How can I plan to improve my chances?
Build in more than one morning, be near a working platform at first light, and check your dates against the full moon. Then ask the operator what it does if the first morning fails, because a second attempt is worth more than any season label.
Do I get my money back if no shark appears?
It depends on the operator. Sumbawa Tour says it offers no refund on sightings, while Sumbawa Adventour refunds part of the payment on its day trip. Get the policy in writing before you pay, including what happens if weather cancels the outing.
