A Bali to Komodo crossing via Sumbawa is a one-way or round-trip liveaboard along Sumbawa's north coast, past Moyo and Satonda toward Gili Banta and the Komodo area. Operators publish it on a narrow calendar: Neptune One lists one June 2027 departure, and Mermaid II lists round trips on dates from May to August 2027.

What does a crossing cover along the north coast?

A crossing is a Sumbawa liveaboard built as a transit with stops. The boat has to cover the distance between Bali and the Komodo area, and the stops are fitted around that passage. Komodo Resort describes Neptune One's route as following the north coast of Sumbawa past Moyo and Satonda to Gili Banta. The same page calls the boat a 39-metre phinisi, one example of the scale of vessel on this run and not a norm. Our pages on Moyo by liveaboard and Satonda by liveaboard show what those two stops involve.

Gili Banta marks the edge of the Komodo area on this route. Dive Happy places it off Sumbawa just outside the Komodo National Park boundaries, and names Galley Rock for manta rays and strong currents. Further west, Neptune Scuba Diving describes the crossing as passing close to Tambora's flat-topped silhouette. The same site also mentions Sangeang, and Saleh Bay in season, which is less firm than a fixed stop.

Here is what each seller names. The stops column uses the seller's own list and should be read as an intention.

Which operators publish these trips, and when?

The calendar is thin, and that is the main thing to plan around. Neptune's scuba site says its crossing runs once a year in June, as the boat moves east for the Komodo season, with about 25 dives over 9 nights. Komodo Resort lists the 2027 departure as 20 June. If that date does not work for you, the next one on that boat is not next month. It is a year away, unless the operator tells you otherwise.

Mermaid Liveaboards gives Mermaid II the fuller schedule, with 2027 departures including 22 May, 10 July, 24 July, 14 August and 28 August. Tropical Snorkeling has gone further ahead still. It lists Naga Biru's 15-day trip for 2028 as well, with departures including 15 to 29 April 2028 and 19 September to 3 October 2028. The Arenui calls its page a sample itinerary, so we would not read any date into it without asking.

All of these belong to the sellers named, and availability sits with them. The price table on this page holds what they publish for 2027 and 2028: Neptune One's "from" rate, two Mermaid II cabin classes and Naga Biru's cabin ranges for both years. Those figures carry different labels on purpose, so read each row's wording before comparing it with its neighbour. The Sumbawa liveaboard cost page explains what each kind of rate leaves out.

How do one-way and round trips differ?

One-way trips use the whole journey to get somewhere new. You board in one place and step off in another, so you need a flight home from the far end and a plan for the bags between. Neptune One and Naga Biru are sold this way, with The Arenui's sample running the same coast in the opposite direction. So Komodo to Bali is published as well as Bali to Komodo, at least as a sample.

A round trip returns you to Bali, which simplifies flights and means the boat has to cover the water in both directions. Set the two lengths side by side and you can see the trade: Mermaid II goes out and back in 8 days, while Neptune One takes 10 days to travel one way. Ask how the nights are spent. The number of hours under way, and which sections happen in the dark, tell you more than the headline length does.

  • Flights. A one-way trip needs an open-jaw ticket. From Labuan Bajo, Asik Travel reports nonstop Wings Air flights to Praya on Lombok, one way of getting back toward Bali. Our access guide has the other links.
  • Stops. A round trip has to fit both directions, so ask which stops happen on the way out and which on the way back, and whether any are dropped when the schedule tightens.
  • Rate basis. Mermaid II prices by cabin class, Neptune One shows a "from" rate and Naga Biru gives a range per person sharing. Ask for the same cabin type from each before you compare them.
  • Who the trip suits. A traveller continuing east gets more from a one-way ticket. Someone with a fixed flight out of Denpasar may have no use for one.

Is a crossing better value than booking Sumbawa and Komodo as two trips? No published figure isolates the Sumbawa part of a crossing, and the Sumbawa and Komodo comparison explains why a clean price contrast does not exist.

What can a crossing leave out?

Two different things can go missing: stops and costs. Stops first. Mermaid II puts it in the trip name, whereas the Neptune material treats Saleh Bay as something in season (the Saleh Bay whale shark liveaboard page sorts the listings by wording), and Komodo Resort's page leaves it as a question you can raise. Sangeang gets similar treatment. Naga Biru's organiser says openly that the order depends on conditions, and Coralia warns on its own sample trip from Labuan Bajo that the itinerary may change. If a stop is the reason you are booking, get the wording on it in writing, along with what happens when it is skipped.

Costs are easier to check, because at least one operator spells them out. This is Komodo Resort's list for Neptune One's trip. It is one example and not a standard.

What can a crossing leave out?
Included, per Komodo ResortExcluded, per Komodo Resort
Cabin with en-suiteNitrox
TransfersRental equipment
Scheduled dives with tanks and weightsSingle cabin supplement
Three meals and snacksPark and port fees
Basic Starlink and snorkelling gearDrinks

A crossing can touch more than one protected area, so the fee question is worth asking per park rather than as a single line. Flights to the start and home from the finish are another cost to pin down: this list does not mention them, so ask. Charges that surface late are collected in the hidden costs guide.

Does a crossing suit divers only?

Not all of them. Naga Biru's trip is sold to snorkellers, and its organiser describes snorkelling in bubbles rising from the black sand around Sangeang. Neptune One's listed rate is built around scheduled dives, so a non-diver on board is joining a schedule set by someone else's dives. Ask Mermaid II the same question about its own trip.

Divers should read the Gili Banta line with care. Komodo Resort reserves its Advanced recommendation for that site, Neptune's own page recommends Advanced with at least 25 logged dives for the crossing as a whole, and Liveaboard Indonesia says reef hooks are essential at Gili Banta. If your logbook is thin, ask how the boat handles the current sites and whether there is a shallower option while others dive them. Our diving guide has the depths and levels by site.

What is the season for the crossing?

Neptune's site says liveaboards rarely make this crossing from December to March, because the northwest monsoon brings swell to the north coast. Every date quoted on this page falls outside that window, from April through to early October. La Galigo calls April to November the general peak season, with calmer seas and higher prices.

Komodo Resort's monthly table points the same way for visibility, reaching 20 to 30 metres from May to August. A June or July crossing therefore sits in the part of the year those two sellers favour. That does not settle the whale shark question, which has its own disagreement, covered in the best time guide along with the climate figures.

What should you confirm before paying?

A crossing commits you to dates, two ends and a long passage, so the questions are worth asking in writing. Work through these with the operator, or with whoever is selling you the berth.

  1. The date on the operator's current calendar. Dates on this page were checked in November 2026 and can move.
  2. The meeting point at each end. Komodo Resort leaves the final word to its reservations team. Do not book a transfer until you have this.
  3. The named stops. Which are firm, which depend on season, and what replaces a stop that is dropped.
  4. Park and port fees. Whether they are in the rate, how much is expected and when you pay it.
  5. The cabin behind the rate. Which deck, how many sharing, and any supplement if you travel alone.
  6. Payment stages. Tropical Snorkeling sets an initial deposit, interim deposits at 12 and 6 months and the balance three months before departure. That is one organiser's plan and not a norm, but a long-range booking may look like it.
  7. Experience required. Certification level and any minimum dive count for the current sites.

Nothing on this page is a berth on any of these boats. For the wider set of options, including the patterns that never touch Bali, see the route patterns. With only a few days, the short programmes from Sumbawa Besar skip the crossing altogether.

What else do people ask about the Bali to Komodo crossing?

Does a Sumbawa liveaboard depart from Bali?

Some do. Neptune One's crossing and Mermaid II's round trip both start from Bali, and Naga Biru runs between Bali and Labuan Bajo. Other Sumbawa trips start from Sumbawa Besar or Labuan Bajo instead.

Can I sail the route from Komodo to Bali instead?

Yes, at least on paper. The Arenui publishes a sample 10-day itinerary from Labuan Bajo to Bali, including Sangeang and Moyo. It is labelled a sample, so ask the operator which dates actually run in that direction.

Is the crossing available in December?

Rarely, according to Neptune Scuba Diving, which says boats seldom make the crossing from December to March because of swell on the north coast. None of the departures we quote fall in those months.

Will a crossing stop for whale sharks?

Not always. Mermaid II names them in its trip title, while the Neptune material says Saleh Bay in season. Ask for the stop in writing, and remember that a stop in the bay is still not a sighting.

Do I need Advanced certification for the crossing?

Not always, and the sources differ. Komodo Resort recommends Open Water for most sites and Advanced for Gili Banta, while Neptune Scuba Diving recommends Advanced with at least 25 logged dives for its crossing. Ask the seller of your date before you pay a deposit.
