Sourced figures: prices in the table are published by the operators and guides named, with source and check month. They are not our offers, and they change. Nothing here is legal or medical advice.

Short trips from Sumbawa Besar exist, and a few operators describe them. Sumbawa Tour publishes a private 4D/3N programme with two whale shark mornings, plus a 3-day version, and Tiger Blue describes a 4-night, 5-day trip that returns to the same town. We found no per-person rate on those pages, so ask for a written total.
Who publishes a short trip from Sumbawa Besar?
These two operators give the most detail on trips of four days or more, and the programmes below are theirs to change. Shorter listings come further down.
| Detail | Sumbawa Tour | Tiger Blue |
|---|---|---|
| Length as described | 4 days, 3 nights | 4 nights, 5 days |
| Start and finish | Sumbawa Besar, with airport pick-up | Departs from and returns to Sumbawa Besar |
| How it is sold | Private programme | Private charter or by the cabin, as Tiger Blue describes its trips |
| Published per-person rate | Not published | Not published; only its park fee |
La Galigo's cost guide also names 4 days and 3 nights as one of the usual lengths for Sumbawa trips, which tells you the format is familiar without telling you who runs it or when. A label like 4D/3N is also used for something else entirely: the shared boats between Lombok and Labuan Bajo sell the same number of days on a one-way passage. If that is what you want, read the page on Lombok to Labuan Bajo via Sumbawa instead. This page deals with the shortest Sumbawa liveaboard format: trips that begin and end at Sumbawa Besar.
The one related figure here is Tiger Blue's marine park fee, in the price table on this page, and it is not a trip rate. Any total you hear will come from the operator's reply, and a private programme's total depends on how many people share it, so ask for the figure both as a whole and per person.
What fits into four days?
Sumbawa Tour's programme is the clearest outline, and it runs in this order:
| Stage | What the operator describes | Worth asking |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival | Pick-up at the airport | Which flight the pick-up assumes, and what happens if it is late |
| Boarding | Goa harbour | The transfer time, and whether you board the same day |
| Island stop | Satonda | How long ashore, and what you can do there |
| Wildlife | Two whale shark mornings | Where the boat sleeps the night before each morning |
| Island stop | Moyo | Which part of the island, and on foot or by vehicle |
| Last night | A hotel | Which hotel, and whether the room is part of the price |
Read that last row closely. On this programme a 4D/3N label means two nights on the boat and one in a hotel. That may suit you well if you sleep badly at sea or fly out early. It is a poor fit if the nights aboard are the reason you came, so count nights on board for any short trip before you compare it with another. Our pages on Satonda by liveaboard and Moyo by liveaboard cover what those two stops involve.
Two mornings give you a second chance at a whale shark, and no more than that. Sumbawa Tour states that sea conditions rule out any promise or refund on sightings. The page on your chances of seeing whale sharks in Saleh Bay covers what affects a given morning, and the Saleh Bay whale shark liveaboard page sets these mornings beside longer trips.
No source says how operators replace a lost stop on either format, so ask which stop goes first if the sea turns against you.
What is included in these short trips?
Sumbawa Tour's list for the private programme is unusually specific:
- Included: meals, transfers, a licensed guide, the entrance fee, snorkel gear, and both the bagan fee and the local guide boat.
- Excluded: flights and alcohol.
One line needs a question. The operator lists snorkelling gear "except fins" and mentions a life vest in the same phrase. Fins are clearly yours to bring. The life vest can be read either way, so ask whether one is supplied for each guest. The same page asks guests to bring sun protection, a hat, running shoes or sandals and UV sunglasses.
Tiger Blue's Sumbawa page handles park fees the other way: it states a flat per-person fee as not included. So two short programmes from one town treat the same kind of cost differently, and neither is wrong. Ask Tiger Blue for a line-by-line list of its short trip. Nor does the list above mention scuba, so if you plan to dive, raise that before anything else.
Is a shorter trip of two or three days published?
Yes, two that we have opened. Sumbawa Tour publishes a "Liveaboard Tour 3 Days 2 Nights" on a private boat: Goa port, Moyo and Mata Jitu on day one, a night at Satonda, a night at Tanjung Padang in Saleh Bay, the whale shark point from about 06:00 to 08:00 on day three, and Goa harbour again around 14:00. Sumbawa Holiday sells a "Whale Shark Liveaboard 2Day / 1Night" that leaves Goa harbour for Mata Jitu, sails four to five hours to sleep near the whale shark point, and returns the next afternoon between 16:00 and 17:00.
| Programme | Nights on the boat | Whale shark mornings | Satonda | Mata Jitu |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sumbawa Holiday, 2 days 1 night | 1 | 1 | Not listed | Yes |
| Sumbawa Tour, 3 days 2 nights | 2 | 1 | Yes, with a night there | Yes |
| Sumbawa Tour, 4 days 3 nights | 2, then a hotel | 2 | Yes | Moyo is listed; ask about the falls |
Set side by side, the three-day and four-day programmes spend the same two nights on the boat, and the extra day buys a second whale shark morning and a hotel bed. The lists differ in small ways too. Sumbawa Holiday includes fins with its snorkel gear, a marine and conservation fee and the Moyo entrance, and excludes crew tips. Sumbawa Tour's three-day list covers port clearance, the bagan platform fee and "all fees", and excludes hotel and laundry. Its cancellation terms give no refund inside 48 hours but offer another date, then say no refund at all one day before, so ask which line applies. Neither page shows a per-person rate.
If you have less time than that, or want a boat on your own dates, two other formats may serve you better. A whale shark day trip needs no cabin at all, and we set out what you trade in choosing between a whale shark liveaboard and a day trip. If you have a group and want a boat on your own dates, ask about a private Sumbawa liveaboard charter, where the length is something you negotiate and do not pick from a list.
Where does the trip start and finish?
Both programmes above are tied to Sumbawa Besar, which removes the second-airport problem of one-way crossings. You arrive and leave through the same town. Wikipedia's entry on the airport (SWQ) shows Wings Air flying ATR-72s every day to Lombok and Denpasar, and notes that the island's only other airport is at Bima.
If you arrive from abroad, that means a connection through Lombok or Denpasar. Schedules change, so check them before you commit to a pick-up time. Our guide to getting to a Sumbawa liveaboard covers the land and ferry options as well. For the months, see the best time for a Sumbawa liveaboard.
Check the morning of departure too. With a final night in a hotel, as on Sumbawa Tour's outline, you are already ashore when the flight leaves. On a programme that returns to harbour on the last day, ask what time the boat is back before you buy a ticket home.
What do you give up compared with a crossing?
Mainly range. The longer published trips, covered on the routes page, link Sumbawa with Komodo or Bali, while Sumbawa Tour's outline stays with Satonda, the whale sharks and Moyo. Use this as a rough filter:
- A short trip suits you if whale sharks and Moyo or Satonda are the point, your leave is limited, you would rather fly in and out of one airport, or you prefer to snorkel.
- A crossing suits you if you want a full dive programme, want Komodo in the same trip, or care more about nights at sea than about any one animal.
- Cost runs differently. Fewer days mean fewer per-day extras, but a private programme is divided among fewer people. Neither format is automatically the lower spend, and the cost guide shows how to build a total.
What else do people ask about short trips?
Do Sumbawa liveaboards offer routes starting from Sumbawa Besar?
Yes. Sumbawa Tour describes a private 4D/3N programme with pick-up at the airport, and Tiger Blue describes a 4-night, 5-day trip that departs from and returns to Sumbawa Besar. Check current dates with each operator, because these are their programmes and not ours.
How much is a 4D/3N trip from Sumbawa Besar?
No published per-person rate has turned up for these programmes. Ask the operator for the total and the per-person amount in writing, and check whether park and bagan fees sit inside it.
Does 4D/3N mean three nights on the boat?
No, not on Sumbawa Tour's programme, which spends two nights aboard and a last night in a hotel. A different seller may count differently, so ask how many nights you actually sleep on board.
Are two whale shark mornings enough to see one?
Not always. Two mornings give a second attempt, but no source publishes a rate, and Sumbawa Tour says it offers no promise or refund on sightings because of sea conditions.
Can I choose a shorter trip of two or three days?
Yes. Sumbawa Holiday lists a 2-day, 1-night whale shark trip and Sumbawa Tour a private 3-day, 2-night programme, both from Goa harbour. A whale shark day trip is a separate product with no night on board.
Which published prices did we check?
Rates and fees published by named operators, trip organisers and travel guides, each with its source and the month we checked it. They are not our offers. Rates change, and estimates are labelled as estimates; check the source before you rely on a figure.
