Sourced figures: prices in the table are published by the operators and guides named, with source and check month. They are not our offers, and they change. Nothing here is legal or medical advice.

This page answers what buyers ask first about a Sumbawa liveaboard: what trips cost, which routes exist, when to go, how whale shark encounters are governed, what safety advice applies and how this desk works. Each answer is short, names its source and links to the page that covers the subject in depth. Where no source exists, it says so.

What do trips cost, and what is excluded?

Rates depend on boat, cabin and length, so the price table on this page holds one example of each kind and no overall range: a lower deck cabin on Mermaid II's 8-day Bali-Komodo-Bali trip, Neptune One's "from" rate on its 10-day crossing, the mid-range daily tier from La Galigo's operator guide, and a shared-boat whale shark day trip sold by Sumbawa Adventour. These are different products. Read them as examples and not as a ladder from low to high. A figure means little until you know what it leaves out, whether it is a per-person or per-day amount, and who published it, so the table states all three beside each price. Currencies differ too, and we leave each figure in the one its source uses.

Exclusions vary by seller. Komodo Resort's list for one trip, for example, leaves out Nitrox, hired gear, solo occupancy, drinks, and the park and port fees. Entry to Moyo Satonda National Park is also in the table, as The Langkah, a tour operator, reports it. The working method for adding all this up is in our guide to what a Sumbawa liveaboard costs.

Which routes and durations exist?

La Galigo describes three usual lengths: four days, seven days, and eight to ten days on longer crossings. Shorter listings exist too: Sumbawa Holiday sells two days and one night, and Sumbawa Tour three days and two nights. Published examples look like this, and the dates are the operators' own:

Which routes and durations exist?
Operator or boatRouteLengthDates listed
Mermaid IIBali-Komodo-Bali with whale sharks of Saleh Bay8 days, 7 nightsSeveral in 2027, including dates from 22 May to 28 August
Neptune OneBali to Labuan Bajo along Sumbawa's north coast, past Moyo and Satonda to Gili Banta10 days, 9 nights20 June 2027
Sumbawa TourPrivate programme from Sumbawa Besar with Satonda, whale sharks and Moyo4 days, 3 nightsAsk the operator

Reaching the island usually takes a connection. Wikipedia lists daily Wings Air flights from Sumbawa Besar to Lombok and Denpasar, and Bima is the only other airport on Sumbawa. The routes guide compares start ports and stops in more detail. We cannot hold a place on any of these departures from this page, and listing them here does not mean a place is free. When you compare them, look first at where each trip starts and ends: a round trip brings you back to the airport you arrived at, a one-way crossing does not, and a short programme from Sumbawa Besar spends its days around Saleh Bay and its islands and leaves Komodo out.

When should you go?

It depends on whether the sea or the sharks matter more to you, because the sources pull in different directions.

  • Weather: Climates to Travel gives a dry season from June to September and a rainy season from December to March, with about 1,400 mm of rain a year at Sumbawa Besar.
  • Crossings: Neptune's site calls the December to March crossing a rarity, blaming swell on the north coast during the northwest monsoon.
  • Whale sharks, by the record: the ISRA factsheet reports regular year-round observations from 2017 to 2022, with the most in March and April.
  • Whale sharks, by the seller: Komodo Resort gives a season of May to October, with June to August usually the most consistent.

The scientific peak and the operator season do not line up. Our page on the timing of a Sumbawa liveaboard sets those trade-offs out in more detail. If your dates are fixed, start from the month you have and ask an operator what runs then and which stops it would expect to reach. If your dates are open, decide first which of the two matters more to you, calm water on a long passage or time in Saleh Bay, because a single answer for both does not exist in these sources.

What are the whale shark rules?

The national baseline is clear. Decree 18/KEPMEN-KP/2013, enacted on 20 May 2013, gave the whale shark full protected status in Indonesia. Further rules exist at ministry and province level: Konservasi Indonesia reports a Director General decree of October 2022 on responsible whale shark tourism, and West Nusa Tenggara's Governor Regulation No. 100 of 2023 on whale shark governance in Saleh Bay. Since we have not read a binding distance or group limit in those texts ourselves, we do not state one for swimmers.

The most specific wording we have read comes from a resort. Amanwana's guest rules, which it traces to ministry guidance and conservation studies, ask for no physical contact, 3 m from the side and head, 4 m from the tail, and no blocking of the shark's path. Treat those as one operator's rules and a sensible personal minimum. They are not the text of the law. The guide to the whale shark rules goes through the rules in more detail.

Is it safe, and what insurance applies?

That varies boat by boat, and this site rates none of them. The official starting point is Australia's travel advice, which cautions travellers about the state of boat and ferry operations in Indonesia as a whole. The same advice says cover for adventure or high-risk activities should not be taken for granted, so read your policy for diving and boat travel before you book.

By Komodo Resort's account, the nearest recompression chamber is in Bali, which is the reason it strongly advises dive insurance. EcoPro Divers names Labuan Bajo instead, and requires proof of cover at check-in. On health, the US CDC lists rural West Nusa Tenggara among malaria transmission areas, so raise preventive medicine with a doctor well before departure. The checks to make before boarding are on the page asking whether Sumbawa liveaboards are safe.

How does this desk work?

This site is a guide with a request desk attached. It shows no live availability and has no booking engine. The process has four steps:

  1. You write with the route or islands you have in mind, the month, the number of guests, and whether they dive or snorkel.
  2. The desk replies with what can be established, including any gaps in the sources.
  3. If your request can go further, you receive a written offer that names the company behind it and sets out its terms.
  4. You compare that offer with anything else you hold, and you decide.

Everything before step three is conversation, and it reserves nothing. The operators named across this site publish their own trips, and those trips are not ours to promise. The contact page explains how to write a useful first message, and the closing section of the cost guide explains who issues offers. If you already hold a quote from an operator, you can still ask the desk a question about a source or a term; you do not need to take an offer from us to do so.

What else do guests ask before booking?

Is there a typical day-by-day schedule?

No, there is no single schedule, because each operator sets its own and several warn that stops can change. One published outline is Sumbawa Tour's 4D/3N programme, which runs from airport pick-up through Satonda, two whale shark mornings and Moyo to a last night in a hotel.

Are Sumbawa liveaboards suitable for first-time guests?

It depends on the boat and the route. Divers should know that Komodo Resort reserves its Advanced recommendation for Gili Banta, so tell any operator your certification and how much you have dived.

How do I book a trip?

Book with the operator, or ask this desk whether an offer from our companies is possible. Either way, get the route, dates, cabin, exclusions and payment dates in writing before any money moves.

Is a Sumbawa liveaboard suitable for families with children?

It depends on the boat. Ask each operator about minimum age, cabin layout and supervision in the water before you commit.

What weather should I expect on board?

Expect little rain in the dry months and much more from December to March. Climates to Travel gives average rain days at Sumbawa Besar from 22 in January down to 1 in August and September, with peak heat from September to November.

How do I find a reputable operator?

Compare what each operator puts in writing: a dated itinerary, a clear exclusions list, named sites and payment terms. This site publishes no reviews or ratings of boats, and our guide to comparing Sumbawa liveaboard boats sets out the questions to ask.

Which published prices did we check?

Rates and fees published by named operators, trip organisers and travel guides, each with its source and the month we checked it. They are not our offers. Rates change, and estimates are labelled as estimates; check the source before you rely on a figure.
