Sourced figures: prices in the table are published by the operators and guides named, with source and check month. They are not our offers, and they change. Nothing here is legal or medical advice.

Flights to Sumbawa Besar run from Denpasar and Lombok, on Wings Air according to the sources we checked, and those two are the only direct routes listed. The island's other airport is at Bima. From Lombok you can also take the ferry from Kayangan to Poto Tano. Your harbour depends on the operator; Komodo Resort says its reservations team confirms the meeting point.

Which airports serve Sumbawa?

Two. Wikipedia's airport entry says Sumbawa has only Sumbawa Besar (SWQ) and Bima (BMU), and that SWQ has daily Wings Air flights to Lombok and Denpasar on ATR-72 aircraft. Bima airport lies about 10 kilometres south of Bima town, at the eastern end of the island. Sumbawa Tour's and Tiger Blue's short programmes start at Sumbawa Besar, so SWQ is the one to look at first. If an operator tells you to fly to Bima, check that route directly.

Direct flights from Jakarta are a known conflict. Some operator pages mention them, while the route sources we checked list only the Lombok and Denpasar links out of SWQ. Treat a Jakarta nonstop as unconfirmed until a ticket shows it. Schedules change, so run the search for your actual date. Airport time is Central Indonesia Time, UTC+8, so convert if your international ticket shows another zone.

How do you get there from Bali or Lombok?

FlightsFrom lists two direct routes from SWQ: Praya on Lombok at about 40 minutes and Denpasar at about 1 hour. Those short hops are the simplest way in, and they also explain the main weakness in the plan, because everything funnels through one small aircraft type on two routes. Connecting on the same day from a long-haul arrival leaves little room if the first leg runs late.

The price table on this page carries an operator's estimate for return domestic flights to reach Sumbawa. It is an estimate from a cost guide and not a fare, since fares for a specific date change daily. Small turboprops and dive gear are a combination worth checking with the airline before you pack, and the packing guide helps you decide what actually needs to travel.

Use this table to match your boat's start point with a way in. Every time here comes from the source named and should be read as approximate.

What about the ferry from Lombok?

The ferry suits guests already on Lombok who do not want another flight, and anyone who would rather not put dive bags on a small aircraft. The Langkah Travel gives the Kayangan to Poto Tano crossing as 1.5 to 2 hours, followed by about a 2-hour drive to Sumbawa Besar. Komodo Resort puts the same crossing at around 90 minutes. Those two statements are close but not equal, and neither is a timetable, so we leave them as they stand.

Avoid planning a tight connection around the crossing. Kayangan is also the harbour where shared boats on the Lombok route load. Asik Travel describes a Lombok to Labuan Bajo trip leaving Kayangan around 14:00. If that is your trip, you do not need the ferry or Sumbawa Besar at all. Our guide to that route covers how those boats run.

How do you reach Goa harbour and Labuhan Jambu?

These names come from specific programmes, so the first step is finding out whether your operator uses them. Sumbawa Tour describes its private four-day programme as starting with pick-up at the airport and continuing to Goa harbour, then on to Satonda. Ask for the transfer time from the airport to Goa, particularly when your flight lands late in the day. Details of that kind of short programme are on a separate page.

Labuhan Jambu is the launch point named for whale shark day trips. A travel writer puts it roughly two hours from Sumbawa Besar and about four hours from the Poto Tano ferry port. Sumbawa Adventour, a day-trip operator, picks up at 02:00 and reaches Labuhan Jambu around 04:00, which fits the first of those figures. Those hours tell you how early a whale shark morning can start if you are based on land.

Moyo has its own access for anyone not arriving by liveaboard. The Langkah Travel says public boats leave from Muara Kali near Sumbawa Besar airport, on an unreliable schedule, and tend to go only when enough passengers are aboard. That is fine for an open-ended visit and poor for meeting a boat at a fixed hour. The reported fare for foreign visitors appears in this page's price table.

Which gateway fits which kind of trip?

Choose the gateway after the boat, never before. Komodo Resort says that departure ports can change and that its reservations team confirms the meeting point. Buying a non-refundable ticket on the strength of a website's route map is therefore a risk you can avoid by asking first.

  • Round trip from Sumbawa Besar. Fly to SWQ. Ask whether the airport pick-up is included, since it is on some programmes.
  • Crossing from Bali. Bali is your gateway, and the boat brings you along the coast. The return leg is the part to plan. The route patterns show which trips finish somewhere else.
  • Trip from Labuan Bajo. You may not touch a Sumbawa airport at all. Asik Travel reports nonstop Wings Air flights between Praya and Labuan Bajo, a useful link for guests arriving through Lombok.
  • Shared boat from Lombok. You need Kayangan, on the Lombok side, not Sumbawa.

What paperwork do you need on arrival?

Australia's travel advice says arrivals by plane or boat at international entry points must complete an arrival card and apply for an e-Visa on Arrival. That wording is written for Australian travellers, and rules vary by passport, so anyone else should confirm their own position with Indonesian immigration. We do not cover visa rules beyond that notice.

The domestic flight to Sumbawa happens after you have cleared that process at your international entry point. Keep your passport and insurance details together. Dive operators have their own document demands too, and our packing guide lists what they ask for.

What buffer should you leave before a boat departs?

A full day, by two sellers' advice. Liveaboard Indonesia recommends a buffer day before departure and says delays on the Bali to Bima route are not uncommon, and Neptune Scuba Diving suggests arriving in Bali a day or two early. Neptune's pick-up closes before 12:00 on day one, and EcoPro Divers sets its latest check-in at 12:00 in Labuan Bajo. We found no rule in hours for a Sumbawa Besar start, so here is the reasoning. The direct links out of SWQ are few, the aircraft is small, and a boat that leaves on a tide or a fixed plan may not be able to wait for a delayed passenger. If your flight into Sumbawa is the last leg of a long journey, sleeping nearby the night before removes most of that risk at the cost of one hotel room.

The same thinking applies at the far end, with more force on one-way trips. Divers have a further limit, since EcoPro asks for at least 24 hours between the last dive and a flight. Before you book a homeward flight, ask three things:

  • What time does the boat expect to arrive, and how firm is that time?
  • Is there a transfer to the airport, or do you arrange it yourself?
  • If the last stop runs late, who pays for a changed flight?

Sumbawa Tour's programme ends with a last night in a hotel, which is one way of building in that margin. Any operator who plans the day of departure carefully should have ready answers, and a vague reply is useful information in its own right.

What else do guests ask about reaching the boat?

Can I fly direct to Sumbawa Besar from Jakarta?

Not on the route lists checked here, which show only Denpasar and Lombok as direct links from SWQ. Check a live booking search for your date.

Is Bima a good airport for a Sumbawa liveaboard?

It depends on where the boat starts. Sumbawa Tour's and Tiger Blue's short programmes start from Sumbawa Besar, while Liveaboard Indonesia says standalone Sumbawa trips typically embark from Bima, so ask your operator before you buy a ticket.

Who arranges the transfer from the airport to the boat?

On two published lists, the operator. Sumbawa Tour's programme starts with an airport pick-up and Komodo Resort lists transfers among its inclusions. Other sellers may stop at the harbour, so have it stated in writing.

How do I find out the exact meeting point?

Ask the operator shortly after booking, and again close to departure. Komodo Resort says its reservations team confirms the point and warns that ports can change, so avoid fixing a transfer from a general route description.

Is a public boat to Moyo a sensible way to join a liveaboard?

No. The Langkah Travel describes those boats from Muara Kali as leaving only when enough passengers are aboard, on an unreliable schedule. They suit an open-ended visit to the island and not a fixed boarding time.

Which published prices did we check?

Rates and fees published by named operators, trip organisers and travel guides, each with its source and the month we checked it. They are not our offers. Rates change, and estimates are labelled as estimates; check the source before you rely on a figure.
