Sourced figures: prices in the table are published by the operators and guides named, with source and check month. They are not our offers, and they change. Nothing here is legal or medical advice.

A clean price gap between a Sumbawa liveaboard and a Komodo liveaboard does not exist, because many of the trips listed here also sail through Komodo. What you can compare is the stops, the diving conditions and the health advice. If a seller quotes a Sumbawa premium, ask for both versions on one boat, in one month, in writing.

Are these really two separate trips?

Often not, going by these listings. Several longer trips pair Komodo with Sumbawa stops, or end at Komodo's doorstep. Only the short programmes out of Sumbawa Besar read as a Sumbawa liveaboard with no Komodo in it. Here is how the listings describe themselves.

So the real choice is less Sumbawa or Komodo than Komodo alone, Komodo plus the Sumbawa coast, or a few days based on Sumbawa Besar with no Komodo at all. Framing it that way makes the rest of the decision simpler, because you are now pricing extra days and extra stops rather than two rival destinations.

Why is there no clean price comparison?

Because the things being compared are bundled together. A fair test needs the same boat, the same cabin and the same month, sold once with the Sumbawa stops and once without them. We have not found a pair like that in public listings.

The two lines in the price table on this page show the problem. One is the Mermaid II fare, a single rate for an 8-day trip that already contains both areas. The other is not a trip at all: it is a Komodo National Park entry fee as reported by Asik Travel, a travel guide, and the table labels it as distinct from the Moyo Satonda fee. They cannot be subtracted from each other to produce a Sumbawa premium, and any article that does so is guessing.

Three further things muddy any quick comparison:

  • Length. A longer trip costs more whatever the route. Without matching nights, a gap in fares tells you little about geography.
  • Currency and basis. Sellers quote in different currencies, per person, by cabin class, and sometimes with a "from" rate.
  • Extras. Komodo Resort lists park and port fees among its exclusions, so a fare can look lower simply because it leaves them out.

The direct route is to ask one seller that runs both kinds of trip for both prices, on the same boat. If the seller cannot do that, compare the total you would pay against what each trip adds, using the published 2027 fares as a sense of scale.

What does Sumbawa add to a Komodo route?

Stops along the Sumbawa coast, and the sailing days to reach them. The sellers name these:

  • Saleh Bay. Mermaid II's title names its whale sharks, though sightings are never certain, as the Saleh Bay guide explains.
  • Moyo. Reef sites for divers and a waterfall ashore, covered in the Moyo guide.
  • Satonda. A crater lake on a small volcanic island, with a 77-hectare lake in its caldera according to Wikipedia.
  • Gili Banta. Dive Happy places it off Sumbawa, just outside the Komodo National Park boundaries, and known for manta rays at Galley Rock. It is the stop where the two areas almost touch.
  • Sangeang. Named on Arenui's Labuan Bajo to Bali sample, which also describes volcanic bubbles escaping from the seabed in the shallows off the island.

The price of all this is time at sea. A Bali to Labuan Bajo crossing, described in the crossing guide, gives you the coast in order. It also gives you days when the boat is mainly moving. If your interest is Komodo and you have a week, adding Sumbawa may cost you Komodo dives rather than add to them, so ask how the nights divide between the two.

What do sources say about Sumbawa dive levels?

Sources rate Sumbawa's sites without ranking them against Komodo's. Komodo Resort's Sumbawa page recommends Open Water certification for most sites and Advanced for Gili Banta. Dive Happy reports strong currents at Galley Rock, and Liveaboard Indonesia says reef hooks are essential at Gili Banta.

That gives you a useful way to think about a combined trip. Komodo Resort presents most of its Sumbawa sites as open to a newer diver. Gili Banta is flagged as harder, and it sits right beside the Komodo boundary. If your log is thin, the sensible question is which dives on your route carry a higher requirement, and whether you sit out if conditions or your experience fall short. Ask how the guide decides. The diving guide lists the sites and depths the operators publish.

What health advice applies to Sumbawa?

On malaria, Sumbawa has a clear flag, and you should check the rest of your route the same way. The US CDC lists rural areas of West Nusa Tenggara among malaria transmission areas and recommends that travellers to certain areas of Indonesia take preventive medicine. Sumbawa's short trips sit inside that province. For a combined route, look up every place you will sleep or go ashore on the same CDC page, rather than assuming Komodo and Sumbawa share one answer. Take the full itinerary to a doctor, since the choice of medicine is a medical question.

The other health point is distance. Komodo Resort strongly advises dive insurance and places the nearest recompression chamber in Bali. That is the operator's word, and it is a reason to read your policy before a route that takes you far from Bali.

How do you decide between them?

Work from your dates and your reason for going.

  • If whale sharks are the point and you have under a week, a short programme from Sumbawa Besar is the only option here that skips Komodo.
  • If you want both and have eight days or more, look at round trips or crossings that name Saleh Bay on your departure.
  • If Komodo's sites are the point and Sumbawa only sounds interesting, price the extra days honestly, and compare what you give up.
  • If you are a newer diver, read the Gili Banta advice before choosing a crossing.

Which published prices did we check?

Rates and fees published by named operators, trip organisers and travel guides, each with its source and the month we checked it. They are not our offers. Rates change, and estimates are labelled as estimates; check the source before you rely on a figure.

What do readers ask about Sumbawa versus Komodo?

Is a Sumbawa liveaboard more expensive than a Komodo liveaboard?

No one can say so cleanly. Many of the trips listed here also include Komodo, so their fares cover both areas. Ask a single seller for both versions on the same boat and in the same month.

Can I combine Sumbawa and Komodo on one trip?

Yes. Mermaid II, Coralia and Tiger Blue all describe trips that join the two, and Neptune One sails the Sumbawa coast on its way to Labuan Bajo. Confirm the stops for your own departure.

Do I need Advanced certification for the Sumbawa leg?

Not for most sites, according to Komodo Resort, which reserves its Advanced recommendation for Gili Banta. Check the requirement with whoever sells your trip.

Does Komodo park entry cover Moyo Satonda National Park?

No. They are separate parks, and the Komodo entry fee in the price table on this page is labelled as a different charge from the Moyo Satonda fee.

Does malaria advice apply to Sumbawa?

Yes. The US CDC lists rural areas of West Nusa Tenggara among its malaria transmission areas. See a doctor with your full route before deciding on preventive medicine.
